At Barry Callebaut, we want to understand what we can do to move the boat faster towards combating child labor, getting farmers out of poverty and improve the carbon balance on farms.
As part of Barry Callebaut's Forever Chocolate plan, we are implementing pilot programs in five origin countries to test innovative practices to help professionalize farming. But this is not a ‘one size, fits all’ approach. Our pilot projects focus on the adoption of farm business plans which take a personalized view to recommend the best practices for a particular farm.
So what are the activities and initiatives being tested?
Our pilots include intercropping, grafting, diversification of income, good carbon practices, and community engagement on topics such as deforestation and child labor. To measure the impact of our pilots we have also partnered with Wageningen University and Research to become involved as an independent party to validate our work.

Forever Chocolate is Barry Callebaut's plan to make sustainable chocolate the norm by 2025 to help ensure future supplies of cocoa and improve farmer livelihoods. It supports the Cocoa Horizons Foundation in its goal to shape a sustainable cocoa and chocolate future.
